Credits for Degree 132
1. ENGL 112 recommended. Qualified students are encouraged to consider ENGL 120.
2. Students lacking Biology 112 must take BIOL 111 before taking BIOL 121.
3. Student must take 3 credits of PHYS in addition to PHYS 101.
4. MATH 110 may substitute for any of the specified differential calculus courses listed. If a student took a 4 or 6 credit course in MATH in first year, the extra credits count towards electives that can lower the required elective credit in later years. Electives can be distributed differently between the years as long as students take a minimum of 30 credits each winter term and have 132 credits of coursework by graduation. At least 12 credits must be from the Faculty of Arts in addition to ENGL.
5. Sufficient courses numbered 300 or higher in Arts or science to meet Faculty requirements for upper-level courses. Suggested electives: ANAT 390, 391; ASTR 101, 102; BIOL 331, 334, 335, 442; MICB 302, 402; PCTH 305; PSYC 100; PHIL 120, 125.
6. Students should note that they may obtain credit for only one of the introductory courses in statistics listed under Credit Exclusion Lists.
7. Students will normally be required to take PHYL 430 and 449 in the same Winter Session.
Do you recommend any specific electives?
Yes, we recommend the following courses: ANAT 390, 391; ASTR 101, 102; BIOL 331, 334, 335, 442; MICB 302, 402; PCTH 305; PSYC 100, 201; PHIL 120, 125. These are only recommendations. Students are encouraged to take any electives that interest them.
Are there key faculty or departmental requirements I should be aware of in planning my courses for an undergraduate degree in Physiology?
Yes, you should consider the following: A) All honours students in the Faculty of Science are required to complete 30 credits in the winter sessions of their program.

B) Department of Physiology requires that you complete a minimum of 33 credits in winter session of your second year and that you complete all the required course by the end of this session to be considered for admission.
Is it okay to take some of the required or elective courses in the summer before or after second year?
Yes, as long as you have all your required courses completed by the end of winter session of your second year and you comply with our minimum of 33 credits in second year.
Does your department offer a Majors program in addition to the Honours program?
No.
When are decisions regarding admission to the program made?
The decisions are made in mid May of second year, after all the applicants' winter session marks from second year become available on the on-line transcript.
What are the admissions procedures?
First preference for entry into the third Honours year is given to students who have completed all prerequisites and who have achieved a cumulative First Class standing (80% or greater) for their first and second year required courses, including first class marks in the required biology and chemistry courses, and who have completed at least 33 credits in the Winter session of their second year.

Second preference is given to students with a cumulative average of at least 75% in first and second year, first class marks in the required biology and chemistry courses and who meet the 33 credit criterion above.

Students should apply to the program in their second year. The deadline for application is March 31st. Application forms are available for download here. To complete the process, students must make an appointment to see an advisor and bring their completed application forms to the appointment.
How many students typically apply for the program and how are typically admitted?
Fifty to seventy students apply and about 15-28 have been admitted.
Do you consider extracurricular activities in determining admission to the program?
No.
Can I do a minor in another program while in Honours Physiology?
Yes, but we ask that you finish your physiology requirements in your first four years and if necessary take an additional year to complete your minor requirements. Depending on the minor program you have in mind, you may be able to do both in four year. Please note that you must have approval from the Faculty of Science as well as the department of Physiology to complete a minor program.
