You are cordially invited to attend a celebration honouring the life and career of Professor Tony Pearson who passed away on January 6, 2011. Friends, colleagues, students and family will gather to pay tribute to a man who was widely respected and is sadly missed by all. A number of people will share their thoughts with those present, and this will be followed by an informal gathering during which afternoon tea will be served.
For catering purposes you are respectfully asked to RSVP by March 23rd 2011 to Ms. Naz Khan (nazk@exchange.ubc.ca or telephone 604-827-4302). If you are unable to attend you are invited to send your written comments for inclusion in the Book of Condolence. Alternatively, please contact Dr. Kenneth Baimbridge (baim@interchange.ubc.ca) if you would like him to read out a few words on your behalf.
Cecil Green Park House can be found off Cecil Green Park Road, just north of Chancellor Boulevard and opposite the University Rose Garden. Limited pay parking is available on Cecil Green Park Road, or in the nearby Rose Garden parkade on the south side of Chancellor Boulevard. A map is attached for your convenience. |

| Susanne Clee, Assistant Professor in the Department of Cellular & Physiological Sciences, has been awarded the Canada Research Chair (Tier 2) in the Genetics of Obesity and Diabetes. Her research focuses on the identification of new genetic factors that increase the risk of developing obesity and diabetes. |

| New Link Discovered Between Obesity & Type 2 Diabetes |
| Jim Johnson, Assistant Professor in the Department of Cellular & Physiological Sciences and the Department of Surgery, is the senior author of this significant paper published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. "Using a powerful new technology called proteomics, we were the first to show that fats can dramatically reduce the levels of Carboxypeptidase E, thereby linking one of the most important diabetes risk factors to this important protein that controls beta-cell function and survival." |

| Type 1 Diabetes Breakthrough |
| Timothy Kieffer, Professor in the Department of Cellular & Physiological Sciences, and his lab have discovered how to cure Type 1 diabetes in laboratory mice, by genetically engineering cells in the animal’s gut to produce insulin at meal times. The researchers altered K cells so that instead of producing glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide, they produced insulin. |
